Motor Vehicle Accidents

Under Alberta's auto insurance system, if you're injured in a collision, you have greater access to early medical intervention to get you better sooner. But you must...

  1. Within 10 days of the collision:
  • Seek treatment from a primary health care provider like a physiotherapist. If your injury is a sprain, strain or minor whiplash injury, Ponoka Physiotherapy & Acupuncture Clinic (Our clinic) does not need authorization from your insurer for the first 12 weeks of treatment and will bill the insurer directly. For other injuries you'll be reimbursed for eligible expenses from your private health care plan or your Section B benefits from your automobile insurer.
  • File the appropriate forms with your insurer if you have a sprain, strain or minor whiplash. ( For other injuries, you have 30 days.) The forms are available from our clinic, your insurer or insurance broker or at www.autoinsurance.gov.ab.ca. Your insurer will get back to you within five days.
  • File an injury report with the police.

    2.   Within 3 weeks:

  • Seek a reassessment of your injury if you are not recovering as expected.
  • If our clinic feels that you will not be able to work for some time, you may access your section B benefits for lost income.
  • Access funeral, grief counselling and death benefits if a family member was fatally injured in the collision.

     3.  Within 12 weeks:

  • If you have not recovered, our clinic may refer you to an Injury Management Consultant for further assessment. Your insurer must authorize any additional treatment after 12 weeks from the date of the collision.

     4.  After 12 weeks:

  • Consult an Independant Certified Examiner if you and the other party's insurer dispute whether your injury is minor. The party requesting the examiner pays for the service. Both parties must agree to the choice of the examiner or have the examiner selected from an approved list.

For other injuries:

Section B has been increased to $50,000 for  eligible expenses not covered by   Alberta Health Care or your private insurer.
